Soup Nights are gatherings of people who want to eat and socialize. Meet new people, talk, watch movies, performances, listen to music or play games. Eat soup. Be happy.

Soup is provided by the host and should reflect current or cultural themes. Feel free to bring bread, wine, beer, cookies, or other edibles to share with everyone. Don't worry about anything fancy or being able to feed everyone.

As more and more people share the world becomes a souperior place.

We would like to see this become a regular event, happening every Thursday. Of course, obstacles could arise, like annoyed roommates, empty bank accounts or, dare I say, lack of interest. But let's be honest, how could you lose interest in soup night?

Also, soup night rulz.

Also! There's a temporary place to add notes, thoughts, ruminations, comments, names, or whatever you want. It's a super-high-tech-realtime-collaboration-revision-keeping-platform called EtherPad. It's essentially a wiki, so edit it and save revisions and delete things... you can't break it.

We are currently having problems with wordpress. uh oh! However, soup nights are back in effect, and are happening on Mondays. We will get back to weekly updates soon, but for now keep an ear to the ground, and eye on your email. -mgmt!

Soup Night 4 Hot Daze

July 15, 2009 5:40 pm

It’s almost 90 degrees outside right now and, oddly enough, all I can think about is SOUP! Hot, steamy, spicy, brothy, foamy, loamy soup! That last phrase is a typo.

I am, however, dreaming of eating tasty chilled soups on a lovely, warm summer evening. And what better way to celebrate the return of our fellow soup-nighter and sub-continental, Zackery Denfeld?
So once again, it’s chilled (savory) soups and probably a screening of Duck Soup, tomorrow, at 2124 SE Belmont. We’ll probably get started around 7 or 8pm, but you can stop by whenever you feel like it.

soup night tonight and for the summer…

June 4, 2009 12:24 pm

UPDATE: PDX Soup Nights are not done for the summer, but probably won’t be happening every week…

hey gang!
Soup Nights have been absolutely amazing, and really none of it could have happened without you all. So thanks! Thanks for being you.

As summer nears, however, #PDXSoupNight will be taking a backseat position in the weekly activities list. WHY!? Because it’s hot outside, and there are only so many chilled soups one can endure.

BUTT!

…sorry, but fear not, dear reader. PDXSoupNight lives on through the summer as a “brand.” Yes yes indeed, soup night will be around as a hub (of sorts) for summer fun times. So feel free to email me, pdxsoupnight@gmail.com, about your new summer-time drug, and I will be the gateway pusher to the rest of this lovely little community. An email list will come in due time…. duly…

AND YET!

we will be having a soupish night tonight at 713 SE 17th, outdoors and with chilled, fruity soups. following will be a movie screening (probably at 2124 SE Belmont, but maybe elsewhere) of a movie that will knock your socks off. I have no idea what this movie is, but I’m open to suggestion.

who’s got socks that need removing?

vinh!

Holocene!? more like Holocene with SOUP! dang.

I got nothing this time around, folks… my apologies.

Soup night this coming Thursday conflicts with a Don Hellions + Magic Johnson + Here Comes a Big Black Cloud + Stag Bitten show. So here’s what I’m thinking:

SOMEWHAT MOBILE SOUP NIGHT #2

I (or whomever else wants to help) will prep some soups the night before and bring them via the MOBILE SOUP UNIT X-10-50 to corner of SE 10th & Morrison. You will ride there with spoon at the ready, prepped only for consumption. THERE WILL BE NO TALKING! At a certain time I will leave you all to play. At that time I will hand off the MSUX1050 to Max Ogden, who will not be joining us at the show because, well…

MAX!!!! WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO DO AFTER THAT!? WHERE WILL YOU BRING THE SOUP TO NEXT!?

probably no soup night this week…

May 18, 2009 9:55 am

UPDATE: Yes, we will not be having soup night tonight.

…but don’t get too upset, because in two weeks I think we’ll be having the much-anticipated Speed Dating Soup Night.

As with everything, plans could change so I’ll keep updating this post as needed.

…farewell my British Empire … hello my Bharatha Varsha…

May 11, 2009 9:58 am

This week we’re going to give a warm welcome and harsh goodbye to the OG of soup night, Mr. Zackery Denfeld. Zack is traveling back to India next week Tuesday, so we are having a Soup Night send-off–full of Indian soups, Indian TV, and a lecture about his past two years in India.

He’ll be presenting a shortened version of a public lecture he gave a few weeks ago, “Art & Design in Contemporary Urban India,” talking about the experimental media lab CEMA, Design Anthropology and other good stuff.

UPDATE 1: He’ll only be gone from Portland for about a month and a half.

UPDATE 2: This will most likely take place at 2124 SE Belmont.

UPDATE 3: Tonight we’ll have: Sambar, Aloo Gobi Stew, & some lassi (sweet w/ cardamom, mint, cilantro)

first thursday, may, follow up

May 8, 2009 12:20 pm

Holy heck people, mobile soup night was amazing. Seriously. Strap a couple of gallons of soup, bowls, spoons and ladles to your back and start feeding people. I don’t really know what else to say about it.

Strangers aren’t always keen on another stranger’s food offerings, by the way. It’s funny how people respond when you offer them free soup. Outside of Clinton Street Theater, and PDX Film Fest, the ask was mostly met with an incredulous pause. At the galleries, people were more accepting.  I suppose being in a room with like-minded people makes eating random foodstuffs easier.

And the people! A hearty thanks goes out to all the people who ate soup and conversed. You are the wind benath soup night’s wings.

So let’s recap: Clinton Street Theater and PDX Film Fest (forgot your name, owner dude, but thanks for not kicking us off your stoop! also, word to the blog love!) :: Goldsmith Building, Spectre (a great space, but not sure if it’s a gallery. hey, they ate and loved the soup…) and, of course, Homeschool Art Shop (totally granular! let’s do shows in the sweet-ass garage! you galz rulz!) :: Fontanelle Gallery and Shawn Creeden’s cave! (check out his show if you haven’t, it’s beautiful)

Soup night theme update

May 6, 2009 2:33 pm

Soup night this week will be fully mobile, thanks to the Mobile Soup Unit X-10-50. Bring your bikes and a spoon, and a bowl if you’d like.

Update 1: We’re offering two soups tonight, Lemony Asparagus Rice Soup & Cream of Green Bean w/ Hazelnut Milk

Our first stop will be at Clinton Street Theater around 6:30 in support of the PDX Film Fest and artist Ben Coonley.

The second stop, at 7:30, will be at the Goldsmith Bldg, 412 NW Couch, in the Opulent Project space, in support of the homeschool project.

At 8:30 or so, we’ll move on over to an exhibit at Fontanelle Gallery, at 250 SW Pine, for a show by a fellow soup-nighter, Shawn Creeden

Depending on weather and interest, a fourth stop may be somewhere in the SE outdoors around 9-9:30pm, and will be a projection of something awesome. More details to follow. Bring a jacket and some tons of booze.

Eat soup. Ride bikes. Ogle artworks. It’s Soup Night!

This week’s theme is…

May 4, 2009 5:15 pm

We’re a little behind in choosing a theme for this week’s soup night. If you have any suggestions, or want to vote for one of the ideas below, please let us know by leaving a comment. Also, if you’d like to host, now or another week, leave a comment. Basically, leave a comment already.

Possible ideas running through my head right now…

  • Mobile Screening Unit X-10-50! Extreme hotness to the max!
  • H1N1 :: The Hamdemic of Epig Proporktions! (can we make raw pork vegan soups?)
  • We we do things online: What the fuck is twitter? MySpace sucks ass and here’s why. Stop typing already and get on Skype! Okay, okay, I understand the potential value behind Facebook, but isn’t keeping friends supposed to be a little difficult? (that sort of thing)
  • Nipple slips and fuck words! The FCC and Censored Soups!
  • How to spot bad graffiti in PDX… oh wait, it’s everywhere. How to improve the graffiti scene in your neighborhood!

okay, those are my ideas. what are yours?!

PASTORAL CYBER PUNK SOUP

April 26, 2009 8:46 pm

Spring has been flirting with us here in Portland, but it appears that she may be ready to make a commitment, and go steady with us for a few weeks.  That being the case we are excited to bring you the first glimpse of the bright green future some call “Pastoral CyberPunk”.

PCP - is a fuzzy set including Neo-Paganists who write iPhone apps., biohackers who moonlight as molecular gastronomical sous-chefs, and GPS enabled urban hunter-gatherers.  Beardos and Tattooed Godesses are invited to join our invocations (spiritual and digital) for the spirits of spring, this Thursday, 7 PM, 2124 SE belmont.

PASTORAL CYBER PUNK SOUPS:

- 9/10th SCALE STONEHENGE FLOOD SOUP

- COLUMBIAN DRUG CARTEL SUBMARINE SOUP

- URBAN EDIBLES SOUP

And don’t forget to come ON TIME (7PMish) because a caravan of us will be heading over to the DUNES to see Weird Fiction sometime around 9.

no soup for you…we’ve got the week off…

April 23, 2009 8:21 pm

just so you know, about every month or so we try to take a day off. we’re taking this week off. There are big plans for soup night in May so look forward to that! Also, start thinking of some special people you want to invite to “Speed Dating Soup Night” which will probably take place the second week of May –mgmt
